A Day in the Park and Beyond

Today we spent the day mostly in Lake Superior Provincial Park south of Wawa. Decided to drive to the southern end of the park first thing, then work our way back north during the day. It’s a huge park covering about 400,000 acres along the Lake Superior eastern shore and contains numerous pristine lakes, surrounded by beautiful forests. Because it was Sunday, it was busier than normal in the park, especially at the beaches (yes people were swimming in 62° Lake Superior). Most of the beach areas were sandy, which was surprising as most of the shore we’re used to seeing is rocky or covered in pebbles.

We had a nice lunch along one of the beaches, beautiful views of the lake, there was a very slight breeze, but the lake was really calm and flat.

Decided to do the ‘Trapper’s Trail’ which circles Rustle Lake and included a floating boardwalk and some viewing platforms out into the lake. It was only a mile trail, but due to the tree roots everywhere, it made it seem longer. There were only two cars in the lot when we arrived and one noisy family left right after we started, leaving us to hike in the silence of dense woods. Never saw the people in the other car. The lake was perfectly still and very picturesque, we found trees cut by beavers, but sadly never saw one. There were thousands of white water lilies on the edges of the lake. About 1/2 way around we found the beaver hutch and it was huge, clearly they’ve been there for a while.

After that trail we headed north to 'Old Woman Bay’ where we enjoyed a nice walk and sit on the beach, It was a perfect day, low 70's with light winds and hardly a cloud in the sky.

Then it was time to head back toward Wawa, with a couple of waterfall stops along the way. First one was 'Silver Falls', which is on the 'Magpie River' in the town of Michipicoten (part of a First Nations Reservation). You could only see the falls from a distance, but it was still beautiful.

Then we went to see the 'Scenic High Falls' also along the 'Magpie River'. There is a hydroelectric dam at the top of the falls, and the spillway dumps the water along the natural waterway so as not to disturb the waterfall. It is one of the nices falls we've seen in a long time, it had plenty of water coming down as they've had quite a bit of rain lately.

On the way to the waterfall, we passed through fields of blueberries, with a sign saying it was a berry farm and you weren't allowed to pick, so we decided to find their store and see what they had. Bought some frozed wild blueberries, some locally made blueberry jam, some blueberry wine and a bottle of blueberry/maple wine.

We then headed back to the 'North of 17' resturant to fulfill our promise of stopping for dessert that we made to the waitress. Didn't realize they close early on Sunday, so no dessert. 😢

Did some grocery shopping and filled the truck for tomorrow's drive, and then stopped at a Tim Horton's to find some subsitute dessert. Any port in a storm.....
