Big Change!

Started the day getting some new wheel chocks for the camper as one of ours failed, they do keep the camper more stable when large folk are walking around inside. Got them at PrincessAuto, what a great store, had an amazing selection of auto parts, trailer stuff, and a great hardware section.
Then it was east to Echo Bay where we saw the worlds biggest ‘Loonie’ (no not Brian). It was erected in 1992 and stands around 15 feet tall. Robert R. Carmichael, a resident of the village designed the original loonie coin in 1987 and this was erected in his honor.
Traveling east we had lunch at the Serpent River Waterfalls wayside. A lovely quiet park with a short walk to the falls. It was one of the loudest waterfalls we’ve ever been to due to most of the water falling under the highway so the sound was amplified and echoed.
Next stop was in Sudbury, where we went to the Dynamic Earth Science Museum where we went on a tour of a mine. It’s an actual mine, but not one that ever produced any ore, it was built to allow people to discover what it’s like in a mine. Outside the museum stands the ‘Big Nickel’ the pride and joy of Sudbury. It was built in 1964, is 30 feet tall and weighs around 29,000lbs. It was actually made of nickel (the main ore produced in Sudbury at the time), and they used the design of the 1951 Canadian nickel.
On the way into Sudbury we passed the Inco Superstack, with a height of 1250 feet. It is the tallest chimney in Canada and in the Western Hemisphere, it's the second-tallest freestanding chimney in the world. Apparently if you move the mine’s pollution high enough into the air, it just disappears 🤪
We eventually made it to our campground outside of Sturgeon Falls. Tomorrow we’ll be visiting some of the towns and areas that the Schmeler’s (Donna’s family) lived/worked, and some places Donna’s family used to visit when she was a kid.
