Into Canada

Drove through the ‘UP' to the USA/Canada border in Sault Ste. Marie, it was surprising how green everything was, normally by this time of the year it’s starting to dry out, clearly they’ve had lots of rain (none for us, so far).
Made it across the border easily and headed to our campground on the north end of town to get setup. We then headed back to town for a quick visit to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Center. It’s a very cool museum housing a nice variety of old sea planes. They had a number of the old firefighting planes, some that picked up water inside and others that had big scoops to fill buckets/bags. There were many ‘bush’ planes made for taking people and supplies into the back country. Some were so small inside that we looked like giants sitting inside. Learned something new at the museum, they had ‘take-a-part’ wooden canoes that could fit into a small plane and be reassembled once they got to their destination.
They also had something called the ‘Entomica Insectarium’ inside the building and it was filled with amazing bugs and cool reptiles/amphibians. Was a very nice, unexpected surprise.
Then we drove over to the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, which takes you almost under the international bridge and past some old locks and the old buildings that used to manage the original locks. They are also reviving some parts of the old town and have turned some of the abandoned factories into restaurants and nightclubs. It’s great to see the beautiful old buildings being restored to their former greatness.
